Among my genealogy stuff I found an invitation card for a family reunion. The front of the card is a picture of Great Grandmother and someone wrote on the front 'Grossmom'. I had no idea what 'Grossmom' was. I looked it up on the Internet but didn't find anything. I used a site for translating and found that Grossmom is a combination of two languages for the word Grandmother. In German it should be 'Grossmutter'. Whoever wrote the word Grossmom combined German as the first part of the word for grandmother and the second part of the English word for mother / mom.

There are several other words in German for grandmother.

Grossmutter-grandmother

Oma-grandma

For some reason I got the idea to try to discover how they met. On the trip I took several pictures. I wish I'd have taken more. When I return there are several more pictures I want to take. One picture might be difficult because I have to drive a gravel road to reach the place where my great-grandfather's farm was. It was beautiful with green wheat growing, rolling hills. I couldn't stop driving to take photos because of the ruts in the gravel road. I was afraid I'd wouldn't be able to start going again because of the condition and deep ruts in the road. I was worried about going off the road into the ditch. I'm not sure which side of the road his farm was on. I plan to call the county court house and find out if they have records back that far.

I love grain elevators because my dad used to paint them when he was younger. I mean he got on scaffolding and literally painted the structure. I add these pictures to honor all the work my father did painting grain elevators.
The next few pictures are of a building in Seger, Oklahoma. Seger is where my grandmother was born. I thought it was a beautiful building and loved the old tree behind it. When I saw the date on the sign it said 'Fred Kauger 1924'. That's the year my mother was born so I thought it would be a fitting picture to honor her and her mother.

WARNING: THE PHOTOS ARE UPSETTING

On January 26, 2016 I was opening a curtain in my office when I happened to look outside and what I saw was upsetting. I saw the Pitt Bull dog mother attacking one of her puppies inside an igloo dog house. I knew she was attacking the puppy because I could hear the puppy screaming in pain.

I called the owner of the dog and told her what I saw and she said she'd be home in a few minutes. She didn't come home in a few minutes. I was very afraid for the puppy and I quickly grabbed my pepper spray, my phone, and a long dowel rod and went outside to the fence in order to try to stop the massacre . I used the dowel rod to hit the fence and a tree in order to get the attention of the mother dog and the other puppy who was helping in the killing. Noting I did stopped this madness. I was sick to my stomach, shaking horribly, and trying to think of something that would stop this without endangering my own life. The only thing that I could think of was calling animal control. When they answered I told them what was happening and gave them my address saying that the attack was behind the house directly next door to the east. They too said they would have someone there in a few minutes.

This poor little puppy didn't have a few minutes. I was beside myself knowing that the puppy was being killed. It was horrible. I called the police and told them of the attack and they sent the call to the animal control. They knew who was calling and said they had someone on the way. I told the man that it was horrible and he told me not to watch. I thought that he was right and I closed my curtain and tried not to listen to the puppy screaming for help. I was shaking so bad I couldn't do much. I did go to another window and finally the owner showed up as well as the animal control. The animal control person was a woman. What is a woman going to do to control a Pitt Bull dog? She did nothing. She spoke to the owner briefly and then to my astonishment they hugged as if they were old friends. The owner wore a smile as he entered the gate to his backyard. The animal control person stood outside the fence.

The owner went over to where the puppy was lying in front of the igloo dog house and he reached down to touch the little thing and it screamed and it's little leg raised up as if to say, please don't hurt me. I started to cry. The owner found the mother dog and drug her by the collar into a large chain link cage. Then the animal control person entered the yard and went to see the puppy. Neither of them did anything but stood there talking. I couldn't watch anymore of this theater and left the window. Later I looked again and the puppy was gone and so was the animal control.

The owner's wife, the person that I called at first came home about 3:30 pm, about two hours after she said she'd be there in a few minutes. Her young son rode up on his bicycle and stopped close to his mother's car where she was sitting with the car door open. She said something to her son and pointed to my house and the boy looked this direction. I wondered what she'd said. I also wondered if this boy would blame me for calling the animal control and the possible consequences that could mean.

I had thought of going next door and telling them what I'd seen but kept crying and felt very fragile emotionally. I thought of the old saying, "No good deed goes unpunished." These people love these dogs but are so ignorant. I thought of how they might react to me calling the animal control and because I don't know them well I decided not to go.

I cried off and on for three days. If you've ever watched a television program where a wild animal kills for it's food you'll have only witnessed it, but if you could hear the animal being killed screaming in pain you'd understand how horrible it is for the victim. And this mother Pitt Bull dog was killing her own puppy and not for food.

The owner took his killer dog to a farm for a change of scenery. I thought he'd have it put down but the dog is back in its yard and walking around loose off it's chain. When will these people wake up and stop denying this is a dangerous dog. I'm amazed at how people can be in denial on so many levels. People think that just because it hasn't happened yet it won't happen.

My husband was in shock when I told him what happened. He didn't know what to say. He was in denial about these dogs too. I have never been in denial about the possibility that these dogs would or could attack a person. In fact there is a black male Pitt Bull dog at this same house that jumped the fence into my yard and ran up to me to attack me. I was prepared because I don't trust these dogs. I had a large can of mace and a very long dowel rod. I sprayed the mace at the dog but I don't think it hit its face. I stood there yelling and screaming at the dog to get out of my yard. The dog ran over to a corner of the yard and tried to get out.
When this black Pitt Bull dog ran to the corner I started screaming help as loud as possible. The owner came outside and came to the fence and pulled his dog over the fence by it's collar. The owner then asked me what I'd done to get the dog into my yard. I couldn't believe that he would blame me for the dog attack. The owner asked me if I'd been teasing or tormenting the dog. I yelled at him in a very hateful way, "NO!!!" His attitude tells me that he is either in denial or trying to cover for his animal's acts. Possibly both.

After this attempted attack I went to the animal control office and filled out a complaint. The animal control people acted like I was the criminal. These idiots wouldn't care if I'd been bitten, chewed up, or killed. I'm not going to ever get any help from animal control. Why? Because the owner of the dogs works for the city and is friends with a lot of the other people who work for the city.

Here is sit writing when I need to get up and go to the shooting range and practice my skills. I don't know how to avoid being seriously injured or killed. I've thought of all sorts of ways to keep these animals away from me and my loved ones. I've researched to find something other than shooting and killing them if they jump the fence again. It won't be something I enjoy doing but I'm not willing to be a victim. I just wish my husband would wake up out of his denial. He said he went to the fence and the female Pitt Bull dog was wagging it's tail and happy to see him. I imagine that the little puppy wagged it's tail and was happy to see it's mother when she turned on her own and viciously killed it.

Here are pictures of the attack by the mother dog and one of the other puppies.
I've talked with him via telephone and email. I had a wonderful surprise when he mailed me copies of photos of my great-grandparents. The photos are very old and have faded and discolored. I asked my father's cousin to email me a copy of the pictures so I could restore them. He did and below you can see the results.
I've worked in this pig sty that's cluttered beyond tolerance for far too long. The papers come faster than lightening. You'd think with two shredders I'd be able to manage wouldn't you? You'd be wrong.

Must get back to the cleaning and moving right now and hope I finish this with before and after photos. I'm ashamed of the before because it was a rats nest. If you've ever watched the program "Neat" then you know what my office looked like.

I'll get back next week with an update.Searcherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01411988071623775176noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5798188955888811205.post-31588257525530698862013-04-01T14:51:00.001-05:002014-02-01T17:41:03.935-06:00Photos of Dad

That is the most disgusting thing I've heard of in a long time. House bill 1999 and Senate bill 375 would make horse slaughter legal.

Rep. Skye McNiel, R-Bristow is the author of this horrific bill. It sounds utterly barbaric. Besides her families business could gain $240,000 in commission in one year from the slaughter of horses.

Such a majestic animal that has been the servant of man for time eternal and now our state wants to slaughter them? Makes me sick. Not only slaughter them for money, to make money, they will sell the meat to Mexico, Canada, Europe and who else? They say there is a provision in the bill that prohibits it being sold as meat for Oklahoman's consumption. I believe the government so much.

Rep. Skye McNiel, R-Bristow, grandparents opened Mid America Stockyards 40 years ago and she worked there. She still works there, according to the Daily Oklahoman. This is a family business and they will make thousands of dollars. If 5,000 horses are auctioned in a year, weighing an average of 1,000 pounds, Mid America could expect to collect about $75,000 in annual commissions on horse sales. f prices increase under McNiel's legislation to pre-2007 days, the company could make as much as $240,000 commission on horse sales in a year's time.

Sloan Varner, McNiel's brother and an auctioneer at Mid America, the largest horse auction in the state, estimated as many as two-thirds of the 5,000 horses sold there in a typical year are sent to slaughter houses.

Gail Vacca, who trains thoroughbred racehorses in DeKalb, Ill., and has been active in the anti-slaughter movement since 2002, called reports of an increase in abandoned horses “pure propaganda. … We’ve got a 54-page document debunking almost every single claim of abandoned horses. It’s ridiculous. “

Horses have been a passion for Jena Raymer for more than 30 years now. She hates to think Oklahoma could be a horse slaughter state.

"They are part of American history, and it's just not something that I want to be proud of as an American,” says Raymer.

Jena is one of many horse owners’ statewide urging legislators to reconsider bills that have already been approved in the House and Senate that would end Oklahoma’s 50-year ban on horse slaughtering.

Pam Smith says the fate of her spunky Arabian horse could have been much different. "He wasn't perfect and he wasn't a mare so they were going to sell him, but actually an organization came in and took him or he would have gone to slaughter,” says Smith.

One year I took my grandsons to see the world-renown Express Clydesdales. The change that came over my grandsons was nothing short of miraculous. They calmed down and were different boys. There are horses that help handicap children and people with emotional problems. I think I may need to go see the Clydesdales after hearing that my state is seriously thinking of slaughtering horses. Sick. I won't vote for my representative again if he votes for this bill.

The following are some quotes of Chuck Hagel.

*Hagel In 2001: “The National Security Of The United States Is Not Served By Isolating Iran.” (Sen. Chuck Hagel, Remarks To The American Iranian Council, Washington, DC, 6/27/01)

*Hagel “Denounced U.S. Sanctions Against Iran” In 2001. “On June 27, 2001, however, Mr. Hagel, addressing another AIC [American Iranian Council] gathering in Washington, denounced U.S. sanctions against Iran and Libya, asserting that they ‘isolate us.’” (Editorial, “Iran And Its Apologists,” The Washington Times, 3/29/02)

*Hagel Was One Of Two Senators Who Voted Against Renewing The Iran-Libya Sanctions Act, Which “Helps Deny Iran And Libya Money That They Would Spend On Supporting Terror Or Acquiring Weapons Of Mass Destruction.” “One indicator came on July 24, 2001, when the Senate voted 96 to 2 to renew the Iran-Libya Sanctions Act. The act helps deny Iran and Libya money that they would spend on supporting terror or acquiring weapons of mass destruction. The two senators who opposed the measure? Messrs. Lugar and Hagel.” (Editorial, “Hagar The Horrible,” The New York Sun, 10/11/04)

*In 2007, Hagel Voted Against An Amendment To The Defense Authorization Bill That Labeled The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps A Terrorist Organization. “Iran sprang up as a campaign issue on Sept. 26, when the Senate voted 76 to 22 for a defense authorization bill amendment sponsored by Sens. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) and Joseph I. Lieberman (I-Conn.). The amendment not only urged the administration to label the IRGC a terrorist organization but also said that the U.S. military presence in Iraq could have a critical impact on Iran’s ability to pose a threat to the entire Middle East. Twenty-eight other Democrats supported the amendment, including eight who voted against the 2002 Iraq resolution and Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (Nev.), a fervent critic of Bush’s Iraq policies. Only two Republicans opposed it, Sens. Richard G. Lugar (Ind.), the ranking minority member on the Foreign Relations Committee, and Chuck Hagel (Neb.), a frequent foreign policy critic of the White House.” (Dan Balz, “Iran Becomes An Issue In Democratic Contest,” The Washington Post, 10/25/07)

*Hagel Was “Solely Responsible” For Blocking An Iran Sanctions Bill In 2008. “If, given the prevailing political winds on Iran, it sounds strange that Republicans would have blocked a get-tough measure on the Islamic Republic — there’s an explanation. According to a congressional aide who spoke on background to the Huffington Post, Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel is solely responsible for the hold on the bill. (Request for confirmation from Hagel’s press office was not immediately returned.)” (Seth Colter Walls, “Dems Blame Senate GOP For Blocking Iran Sanctions Bill,” The Huffington Post, 11/3/08)

*Hagel In 2005: “Any Lasting Solution To Iran’s Nuclear Weapons Program Will Also Require The United States’ Direct Discussions With Iran.” SEN. CHUCK HAGEL: “Any lasting solution to Iran’s nuclear weapons program will also require the United States’ direct discussions with Iran. The United States is capable of engaging Iran in direct dialogue without sacrificing any of its interests or objectives.” (Sen. Chuck Hagel, Remarks At The Council On Foreign Relations , Washington, DC, 11/15/05)

*In 2006, Hagel Said The Nuclear Issue Could Not Be Resolved Until Iran’s “Broader Interests” Were Addressed. “Iran holds the key to so many issues, Hagel said, that the nuclear issue cannot be addressed in isolation. ‘Iraq, nuclear capabilities, terrorism, Israel and oil are all part of an Iranian puzzle game that cannot be played one piece at a time,’ Hagel wrote. ‘There will be no lasting solution to the Iranian nuclear threat until the broader interests of Iran, the U.S., the region and the world are addressed.’” (Glen Kessler, “U.S. Under Pressure To Talk To Tehran,” The Washington Post, 5/11/06)

*In 2007, Hagel Sent A Private Letter To President Bush Urging The Pursuit Of “Direct, Unconditional, And Comprehensive Talks With The Government Of Iran.” “I have just secured a private letter — not yet publicly released — from Senator Chuck Hagel to President Bush and copied to Condoleezza Rice, Robert Gates, and Stephen Hadley. I should add that I did not receive this letter from Senator Hagel but from other sources. The letter urges the President to pursue ‘direct, unconditional, and comprehensive talks with the Government of Iran.’” (Steve Clemmons, “Hagel To Bush: Talk To Iran!” Huffington Post, 10/31/07)

*In 2008, Hagel Expressed Support For Opening A Diplomatic Post In Tehran In The Form Of A “U.S. Interest Section.” CHUCK HAGEL: “Now, as to your question about an interest section, obviously we can’t just fly over Tehran and drop an interest section. I get that. But the conversations I’ve had with the Iranian Ambassador to the United Nations, both — actually, the last three, including the current one — other indications I have, I think that that is an area that we could explore. I don’t know why that would not be in our interested to do that.” (Chuck Hagel, Remarks At The Brookings Institute, Washington, DC, 6/26/08)

*In His 2008 Book, America: Our Next Chapter, Hagel Said “Regime Change Should Not Be Our Objective.” “Regime Change is desirable, but that should not be our objective. Bilateral talks with Iran would have no conditions and there would be no illusions that progress would be quick or easy, if progress is even possible.” (Chuck Hagel, America: Our Next Chapter, pp. 95, 2008)

*Hagel: “America’s Refusal To Recognize Iran’s Status As A Legitimate Power Does Not Decrease Iran’s Influence, But Rather Increases It.” (Chuck Hagel, America: Our Next Chapter, pp. 87, 2008)

*Hagel: “The Jewish Lobby Intimidates A Lot Of People Up Here. ” CHUCK HAGEL: ‘The political reality is that you intimidate, not you, but the Jewish lobby intimidates a lot of people up here. And again, I have always argued against some of the dumb things they do because I don’t think it’s in the interest of Israel. I just don’t think it’s smart for Israel.” (Chuck Hagel, Interview With Aaron David Miller For Too Much Promised Land, Random House, 11/3/08)

*Hagel: “I’m A United States Senator. I’m Not An Israeli Senator.” CHUCK HAGEL: “Let me clear something up here if there’s any doubt in your mind. I’m a United States Senator. I’m not an Israeli senator. I’m a United States Senator. I support Israel. But my first interest is, I take an oath of office to the constitution of the United States. Not to a president, not to a party, not to Israel.’” (Chuck Hagel, Interview With Aaron David Miller For Too Much Promised Land, Random House, 11/3/08)

*Hagel Said That The Israel Lobby “Locked Up” Legislators To Support Continued Sanctions Against Libya And Iran. “Sen. Chuck Hagel said Wednesday that the pro-Israel lobby on Capitol Hill has ‘locked up’ many fellow lawmakers to favor continuing U.S. economic sanctions against Libya and Iran. Hagel said that policy isolates America.” (Jake Thompson, “Sanctions Aimed At Iran, Libya Should Be Dropped, Hagel Says,” Omaha World Herald, 6/28/01)

*In 2007, Hagel Said The Palestinian People Have Been “Chained Down For Many, Many Years.” SEN. CHUCK HAGEL: “That’s not the issue here. But when people have no hope, when there’s despair, little else matters. And this is not about terrorists don’t like freedom. Tell that to the Palestinian people who have been chained down for many, many years. Terrorism is not a strategy. It’s a tactic. Terrorism is not a plan. It’s not a belief like democracy or monarchy. It’s a tactic. It’s a tactic. And so it’s far more complicated than what, I think, a lot of us are led to believe.” (Sen. Chuck Hagel, Remarks On S. Con. Res. 2, Expressing The Bipartisan Resolution On Iraq, Committee On Foreign Relations, U.S. Senate, 1/24/07)

*In A Letter Delivered Days Before Obama Took Office, Hagel Urged Him To Talk With Leaders Of Hamas. “Nine former senior US officials and one current adviser are urging the Obama administration to talk with leaders of Hamas to determine whether the militant group can be persuaded to disarm and join a peaceful Palestinian government, a major departure from current US policy. The bipartisan group, which includes economic recovery adviser Paul A. Volcker and former national security advisers Brent Scowcroft and Zbigniew Brzezinski, made the recommendation in a letter handed to Obama days before he took office, according to Scowcroft. … Along with Scowcroft, Volcker, and Brzezinski, who was national security adviser under President Jimmy Carter, signatories included former House International Relations Committee chairman Lee Hamilton, a Democrat; former United Nations ambassador Thomas Pickering from the first Bush administration; former World Bank president James Wolfensohn; former US trade representative in the Ford administration Carla Hills; Theodore Sorensen, former special counsel to President John F. Kennedy; and former Republican senators Chuck Hagel and Nancy Kassebaum Baker.” (Bryan Bender and Farah Stockman, “Top Officials Urge Dialogue With Hamas,” The Boston Globe, 3/14/09)

*National Jewish Democratic Council: “In August 2006, Hagel Was One Of Only 12 Senators Who Refused To Write The EU Asking Them To Declare Hezbollah A Terrorist Organization.” (Michael Goldfarb, “NJDC: Obama Appointee Has ‘Questionable Israel Record,’” The Weekly Standard, 10/28/09)

*After A 1998 Meeting With Syrian Dictator Hafez Al-Assad, Hagel Said “ Peace Comes Through Dealing With People. Peace Doesn’t Come At The End Of A Bayonet.” “Mr. Hagel met in Damascus in 1998 with the terror-sponsoring dictator, Hafez Al-Assad, and returned to tell a reporter about the meeting, ‘Peace comes through dealing with people. Peace doesn’t come at the end of a bayonet or the end of a gun.’” (Editorial: “Hagar The Horrible,” The New York Sun, 10/11/04)

*In 2003, Hagel Failed To Vote On The Syria Accountability Act That Authorized Sanctions On Syria For Its Support For Terrorism And Development Of Weapons Of Mass Destruction. (H.R. 1828, CQ Vote #445: Passed 89-4: R 47-2; D 42-1; I 0-1, 11/11/03, Hagel Did Not Vote)

*In A 2008 Op-Ed With Sen. John Kerry, Hagel Suggested The U.S. Should Offer “Tangible Benefits” To Syria’s Bashar Al-Assad After The Dictator Complained That His “Positive Steps Have Not Been Rewarded.” “While Syria must crack down on the flow of foreign fighters into Iraq, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad claims positive steps have not been rewarded. We should test whether offering tangible benefits brings better results, starting with providing more humanitarian assistance for the nearly 1.5 million Iraqi refugees Syria has absorbed.” (Sens. John Kerry and Chuck Hagel, Op-Ed, “It’s Time To Talk To Syria,” The Wall Street Journal, 6/5/08)

* Hagel And Kerry Said “Our Policy Of Nonengagement Has Isolated Us More Than The Syrians.” “The recent announcement of peace negotiations between Israel and Syria through Turkey, and the agreement between the Lebanese factions in Qatar – both apparently without meaningful U.S. involvement – should serve as a wake-up call that our policy of nonengagement has isolated us more than the Syrians. These developments also help create new opportunities and increased leverage that we can only exploit through substantive dialogue with Syria.” (Sens. John Kerry and Chuck Hagel, Op-Ed, “It’s Time To Talk To Syria,” The Wall Street Journal, 6/5/08)

*ACCORDING TO HAGEL, THE CASTRO REGIME IS HARMLESS

*In 2002, Hagel Called Castro “A Toothless Old Dinosaur” And Said That Despite His Support For Terrorist Groups Throughout The Region, Labeling Him A Threat Would Be “Just Goofy.” “Otto Reich, the State Department’s assistant secretary for the Western Hemisphere, last week laid out a case against overtures to Cuba and its longtime president, Fidel Castro. ‘Castro has supported terrorist groups in every country in this hemisphere except Mexico,’ Reich told reporters Thursday. ‘So he is a terrorist.’ Sen. Chuck Hagel, a main sponsor of Senate legislation to lift economic sanctions on Cuba, countered Reich on Friday, saying that to term Castro a threat is ‘just goofy.’ ‘This is a toothless old dinosaur,’ the Nebraska Republican added.” (Jake Thompson, “Castro Isn’t Threatening, Hagel Says The Bush Administration Says Trade With Cuba Would Be Risky,” Omaha World Herald, 8/18/02)

*In 2008, Hagel Referred To U.S. Policy On Cuba As “Outdated, Unrealistic, Irrelevant” And Described Arguments Supporting Current U.S. Policy On Cuba As “Nonsensical.” “Backing up to catch Chuck Hagel’s comments about engagement with Cuba when he was questioned on CNN a week ago. ‘On Cuba, I’ve said that we have an outdated, unrealistic, irrelevant policy,’ he said. ‘It’s always been nonsensical to me about this argument, well, it’s a communist country, it’s a communist regime. What do people think Vietnam is? Or the People’s Republic of China? Both those countries are WTO members. We trade with them. We have relations. Great powers engage,’ Hagel said. ‘Great powers are not afraid. Great powers trade.’” (Don Walton, “Obama Affects The State,” Lincoln Journal Star, 3/3/08)

* Hagel In 2002: “What Jimmy Carter’s Saying … Is Exactly Right: Our 40-Year Policy Toward Cuba Is Senseless.” “Wednesday, though, Hagel did endorse Carter’s message: that the United States should broaden relations with Cuba and lift its trade and travel embargo. ‘What Jimmy Carter’s saying … is exactly right: Our 40-year policy toward Cuba is senseless,’ Hagel said. ‘It’s outdated, it’s irrelevant and it just doesn’t fit. We should be wise and be trying to enhance America’s position with peoples of the world.’” (Jake Thompson, “Hagel Declined To Go But Backs Carter’s Message,” Omaha World Herald, 5/16/02)

*ACCORDING TO HAGEL, IT WASN’T WORTH SENDING A MESSAGE TO RUSSIA’S LEADERSHIP TO CONDEMN ANTI-SEMITISM IN RUSSIA

*In 1999, Hagel Was The Only Senator Not To Sign A Letter Condemning Anti-Semitism In Russia. “Jewish leaders are upset that Sen. Chuck Hagel was the only member of the Senate not to sign a letter urging Boris Yeltsin to speak out against growing anti-Semitism in Russia. An advertisement in Sunday’s New York Times displayed a Senate letter signed by 99 senators with only Hagel’s name missing. Hagel said Thursday he has taken even stronger and more effective action by writing President Clinton, asking him to appeal directly to Yeltsin to combat the anti-Semitic acts and rhetoric. But a trio of Jewish leaders in Lincoln said they wish Hagel had also joined his colleagues in signing the Senate letter.” (“Hagel Criticized Over Senate Letter To Yeltsin,” The Associated Press, 6/25/99)

Senator Hatfield, Mr. Chief Justice, Mr. President, Vice President Bush, Vice President Mondale, Senator Baker, Speaker O'Neill, Reverend Moomaw, and my fellow citizens: To a few of us here today, this is a solemn and most momentous occasion; and yet, in the history of our Nation, it is a commonplace occurrence. The orderly transfer of authority as called for in the Constitution routinely takes place as it has for almost two centuries and few of us stop to think how unique we really are. In the eyes of many in the world, this every-4-year ceremony we accept as normal is nothing less than a miracle. 1
Mr. President, I want our fellow citizens to know how much you did to carry on this tradition. By your gracious cooperation in the transition process, you have shown a watching world that we are a united people pledged to maintaining a political system which guarantees individual liberty to a greater degree than any other, and I thank you and your people for all your help in maintaining the continuity which is the bulwark of our Republic. 2
The business of our nation goes forward. These United States are confronted with an economic affliction of great proportions. We suffer from the longest and one of the worst sustained inflations in our national history. It distorts our economic decisions, penalizes thrift, and crushes the struggling young and the fixed-income elderly alike. It threatens to shatter the lives of millions of our people. 3
Idle industries have cast workers into unemployment, causing human misery and personal indignity. Those who do work are denied a fair return for their labor by a tax system which penalizes successful achievement and keeps us from maintaining full productivity. 4
But great as our tax burden is, it has not kept pace with public spending. For decades, we have piled deficit upon deficit, mortgaging our future and our children's future for the temporary convenience of the present. To continue this long trend is to guarantee tremendous social, cultural, political, and economic upheavals. 5
You and I, as individuals, can, by borrowing, live beyond our means, but for only a limited period of time. Why, then, should we think that collectively, as a nation, we are not bound by that same limitation? 6
We must act today in order to preserve tomorrow. And let there be no misunderstanding—we are going to begin to act, beginning today. 7
The economic ills we suffer have come upon us over several decades. They will not go away in days, weeks, or months, but they will go away. They will go away because we, as Americans, have the capacity now, as we have had in the past, to do whatever needs to be done to preserve this last and greatest bastion of freedom. 8
In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem. 9
From time to time, we have been tempted to believe that society has become too complex to be managed by self-rule, that government by an elite group is superior to government for, by, and of the people. But if no one among us is capable of governing himself, then who among us has the capacity to govern someone else? All of us together, in and out of government, must bear the burden. The solutions we seek must be equitable, with no one group singled out to pay a higher price. 10
We hear much of special interest groups. Our concern must be for a special interest group that has been too long neglected. It knows no sectional boundaries or ethnic and racial divisions, and it crosses political party lines. It is made up of men and women who raise our food, patrol our streets, man our mines and our factories, teach our children, keep our homes, and heal us when we are sick—professionals, industrialists, shopkeepers, clerks, cabbies, and truck drivers. They are, in short, "We the people," this breed called Americans. 11
Well, this administration's objective will be a healthy, vigorous, growing economy that provides equal opportunity for all Americans, with no barriers born of bigotry or discrimination. Putting America back to work means putting all Americans back to work. Ending inflation means freeing all Americans from the terror of runaway living costs. All must share in the productive work of this "new beginning" and all must share in the bounty of a revived economy. With the idealism and fair play which are the core of our system and our strength, we can have a strong and prosperous America at peace with itself and the world. 12
So, as we begin, let us take inventory. We are a nation that has a government—not the other way around. And this makes us special among the nations of the Earth. Our Government has no power except that granted it by the people. It is time to check and reverse the growth of government which shows signs of having grown beyond the consent of the governed. 13
It is my intention to curb the size and influence of the Federal establishment and to demand recognition of the distinction between the powers granted to the Federal Government and those reserved to the States or to the people. All of us need to be reminded that the Federal Government did not create the States; the States created the Federal Government. 14
Now, so there will be no misunderstanding, it is not my intention to do away with government. It is, rather, to make it work—work with us, not over us; to stand by our side, not ride on our back. Government can and must provide opportunity, not smother it; foster productivity, not stifle it. 15
If we look to the answer as to why, for so many years, we achieved so much, prospered as no other people on Earth, it was because here, in this land, we unleashed the energy and individual genius of man to a greater extent than has ever been done before. Freedom and the dignity of the individual have been more available and assured here than in any other place on Earth. The price for this freedom at times has been high, but we have never been unwilling to pay that price. 16
It is no coincidence that our present troubles parallel and are proportionate to the intervention and intrusion in our lives that result from unnecessary and excessive growth of government. It is time for us to realize that we are too great a nation to limit ourselves to small dreams. We are not, as some would have us believe, doomed to an inevitable decline. I do not believe in a fate that will fall on us no matter what we do. I do believe in a fate that will fall on us if we do nothing. So, with all the creative energy at our command, let us begin an era of national renewal. Let us renew our determination, our courage, and our strength. And let us renew our faith and our hope. 17
We have every right to dream heroic dreams. Those who say that we are in a time when there are no heroes just don't know where to look. You can see heroes every day going in and out of factory gates. Others, a handful in number, produce enough food to feed all of us and then the world beyond. You meet heroes across a counter—and they are on both sides of that counter. There are entrepreneurs with faith in themselves and faith in an idea who create new jobs, new wealth and opportunity. They are individuals and families whose taxes support the Government and whose voluntary gifts support church, charity, culture, art, and education. Their patriotism is quiet but deep. Their values sustain our national life. 18
I have used the words "they" and "their" in speaking of these heroes. I could say "you" and "your" because I am addressing the heroes of whom I speak—you, the citizens of this blessed land. Your dreams, your hopes, your goals are going to be the dreams, the hopes, and the goals of this administration, so help me God. 19
We shall reflect the compassion that is so much a part of your makeup. How can we love our country and not love our countrymen, and loving them, reach out a hand when they fall, heal them when they are sick, and provide opportunities to make them self-sufficient so they will be equal in fact and not just in theory? 20
Can we solve the problems confronting us? Well, the answer is an unequivocal and emphatic "yes." To paraphrase Winston Churchill, I did not take the oath I have just taken with the intention of presiding over the dissolution of the world's strongest economy. 21
In the days ahead I will propose removing the roadblocks that have slowed our economy and reduced productivity. Steps will be taken aimed at restoring the balance between the various levels of government. Progress may be slow—measured in inches and feet, not miles—but we will progress. Is it time to reawaken this industrial giant, to get government back within its means, and to lighten our punitive tax burden. And these will be our first priorities, and on these principles, there will be no compromise. 22
On the eve of our struggle for independence a man who might have been one of the greatest among the Founding Fathers, Dr. Joseph Warren, President of the Massachusetts Congress, said to his fellow Americans, "Our country is in danger, but not to be despaired of.... On you depend the fortunes of America. You are to decide the important questions upon which rests the happiness and the liberty of millions yet unborn. Act worthy of yourselves." 23
Well, I believe we, the Americans of today, are ready to act worthy of ourselves, ready to do what must be done to ensure happiness and liberty for ourselves, our children and our children's children. 24
And as we renew ourselves here in our own land, we will be seen as having greater strength throughout the world. We will again be the exemplar of freedom and a beacon of hope for those who do not now have freedom. 25
To those neighbors and allies who share our freedom, we will strengthen our historic ties and assure them of our support and firm commitment. We will match loyalty with loyalty. We will strive for mutually beneficial relations. We will not use our friendship to impose on their sovereignty, for our own sovereignty is not for sale. 26
As for the enemies of freedom, those who are potential adversaries, they will be reminded that peace is the highest aspiration of the American people. We will negotiate for it, sacrifice for it; we will not surrender for it—now or ever. 27
Our forbearance should never be misunderstood. Our reluctance for conflict should not be misjudged as a failure of will. When action is required to preserve our national security, we will act. We will maintain sufficient strength to prevail if need be, knowing that if we do so we have the best chance of never having to use that strength. 28
Above all, we must realize that no arsenal, or no weapon in the arsenals of the world, is so formidable as the will and moral courage of free men and women. It is a weapon our adversaries in today's world do not have. It is a weapon that we as Americans do have. Let that be understood by those who practice terrorism and prey upon their neighbors. 29
I am told that tens of thousands of prayer meetings are being held on this day, and for that I am deeply grateful. We are a nation under God, and I believe God intended for us to be free. It would be fitting and good, I think, if on each Inauguration Day in future years it should be declared a day of prayer. 30
This is the first time in history that this ceremony has been held, as you have been told, on this West Front of the Capitol. Standing here, one faces a magnificent vista, opening up on this city's special beauty and history. At the end of this open mall are those shrines to the giants on whose shoulders we stand. 31
Directly in front of me, the monument to a monumental man: George Washington, Father of our country. A man of humility who came to greatness reluctantly. He led America out of revolutionary victory into infant nationhood. Off to one side, the stately memorial to Thomas Jefferson. The Declaration of Independence flames with his eloquence. 32
And then beyond the Reflecting Pool the dignified columns of the Lincoln Memorial. Whoever would understand in his heart the meaning of America will find it in the life of Abraham Lincoln. 33
Beyond those monuments to heroism is the Potomac River, and on the far shore the sloping hills of Arlington National Cemetery with its row on row of simple white markers bearing crosses or Stars of David. They add up to only a tiny fraction of the price that has been paid for our freedom. 34
Each one of those markers is a monument to the kinds of hero I spoke of earlier. Their lives ended in places called Belleau Wood, The Argonne, Omaha Beach, Salerno and halfway around the world on Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Pork Chop Hill, the Chosin Reservoir, and in a hundred rice paddies and jungles of a place called Vietnam. 35
Under one such marker lies a young man—Martin Treptow—who left his job in a small town barber shop in 1917 to go to France with the famed Rainbow Division. There, on the western front, he was killed trying to carry a message between battalions under heavy artillery fire. 36
We are told that on his body was found a diary. On the flyleaf under the heading, "My Pledge," he had written these words: "America must win this war. Therefore, I will work, I will save, I will sacrifice, I will endure, I will fight cheerfully and do my utmost, as if the issue of the whole struggle depended on me alone." 37
The crisis we are facing today does not require of us the kind of sacrifice that Martin Treptow and so many thousands of others were called upon to make. It does require, however, our best effort, and our willingness to believe in ourselves and to believe in our capacity to perform great deeds; to believe that together, with God's help, we can and will resolve the problems which now confront us. 38
And, after all, why shouldn't we believe that? We are Americans. God bless you, and thank you. 39

Ronald Reagan was a wonderful man and a great president. No, I didn't watch on Monday the man who wants to be king. I cleaned my bathroom. If any of his words sounded patriotic I can guarantee he didn't believe them. How do I know? His previous words contradict them. What a shame the inauguration was held on Martin Luther King Day. Martin Luther King was another great man. I didn't watch television all day Monday. What a sad day. On November 15, 2010 my mother passed away. I had been caring for her here in my home for eleven months. Here is her picture when she was a baby.
Below are the digital camera photos of his work. He wasn't sure which way to put the studs for the Bottom Plate. (I hope that's the correct carpentry term for this part of the frame.)
I finally got my USB Port on my computer fixed so I could upload these pictures.
I purchased a pair of very nice pants at Sam's a few weeks ago for a reasonable price. I brought them home and tried them on, they fit, and I put them in to wash. After drying them and hanging them in my closet they hung there until last Sunday. When I pulled these Calvin Klein pants out to wear to church I just happened to smell something on the pants. These pants smell of bug spray. No kidding!

This is not the first thing I've purchased that was made in China and smelled of the exact same oder, bug spray. I first noticed it on a bag that is used for Christmas gift giving. It was one of those pretty little bags to put gifts in so you don't have to buy a box, gift wrap, and spend a lot of time wrapping. I put the gift bag in the garage to let it air out and it never aired out. I ended up throwing it away. Now I smell all the gift bags I buy. I know it looks strange but it's stranger to have China putting bug spray in their products.

One other thing that I buy that has the oder of bug spray are the plastic bowl covers. I just had to toss another set of these bowl covers because they smelled of bug spray. Nice try China. What better way to poison people than to use something we put on our food to store it. I think I'm going with all glass. And not from China.

I had bought a pair of stretch pants from a Dollar General Store and they smelled like bug spray too. I washed them several times and they still smelled. I let them hang out in the garage for a while and that didn't help. I took them back to get a refund.

I'm taking the Calvin Klein pants back to Sam's soon. The pants are very nice except for the bug spray. If I wanted to wear bug spray I'd buy a can and apply it myself. I just had one of my "positive" thoughts. What if the Chinese are putting bug spray in cologne and perfume???? Don't buy cologne or perfume from China.

What else are they putting bug spray in???????? My advice is to smell everything. I'd buy only items made in the USA but... well you know what our wonderful government has done by trading with China. They've put American's out of business and we don't have many choices sometimes.

Smell everything.
It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
Civilization is not inherited; it has to be learned and earned by each generation anew; if the transmission should be interrupted for one century, civilization would die, and we should be savages again.
Certainly, it is a world of scarcity. But the scarcity is not confined to iron ore and arable land. The most constricting scarcities are those of character and personality.
This war was a revolution against the moral basis of civilization. It was conceived by the Nazis in conscious contempt for the life, dignity and freedom of individual man and deliberately prosecuted by means of slavery, starvation and the mass destruction of noncombatants' lives. It was a revolution against the human soul.
He is having trouble with reading the instructions from the manufacture's manuel. He has built some really nice cabinets before. On this project he has questions about how to place several studs. Below is a sketch taken from the manufacture's instructions plus some added info. He is not sure if the 2 x 4 stud is to be on it's end or lying down. I'm not sure of the terminology used in construction. My husband speaks more Spanish than English and the person who is trying to help via phone speaks English. I told my husband to learn more English.

The photo below is the frame my husband has completed so far. The photo was taken with my cheap Tracfone Samsung Cell Phone.
I plan to send the owner of the shop we are buying the heater from a link to this blog. Why? It's too hard to translate what is in my husband's head from Spanish into English in non-carpentry terms. I guess now I'll have to learn carpentry terms in English and Spanish.

I tried to send a picture from my digital camera of the heater frame to the owner of the shop but my USB port on my computer isn't working today. I tried to send a picture using my cell phone but it's so grainy (i.e. the photo at the top of this post) I don't know if the owner of the shop can see well enough to help us. Don't know what to do???? Pray and wait. It's been four years since we've had a heater in the house. We have been using space heaters and those cost a lot of money. God answered my prayer for the money to put in a heater so I know he'll answer me when I pray for my husband to be able to build this frame correctly.

This is the gas heater we are trying to install.
